Buildings and the built environment use 50% of the materials taken from the Earth’s crust. During their lives buildings are the largest energy consuming sector, using almost half of the primary energy and generating about 40% of all greenhouse gas emissions. Waste emanating from building materials is the source of 25 % of all waste. People spend almost 90 % of their time inside buildings.
